AI receptionist pricing: per call or per minute, and the charges to check

Per-minute pricing charges for the time your calls take; per-call pricing charges the same for every call, however long. Per-minute is usually cheaper when calls are short, and per-call is usually cheaper when calls are long. The break-even is the per-call price divided by the cost of a minute: at 49p a call against 12p a minute, about four minutes.

Most AI receptionists sell one of three things: a number of calls, a number of minutes, or unlimited use for a flat fee. Each headline price looks simple. What a month actually costs depends on how long your calls last, what counts as a call and what is added on top. This guide sets out how each model works, the charges that are not in the headline, and the arithmetic at three call lengths.

What do the pricing terms mean?

  • Per-call pricing. You pay for each call answered, whatever its length. Plans usually include a number of calls a month and charge for each call beyond it.
  • Per-minute pricing, or a minute allowance. You pay for the time spent on calls. Most plans include a monthly allowance of minutes and either charge or stop beyond it.
  • Flat or unlimited pricing. One monthly fee with no published limit on calls or minutes, sometimes subject to a fair-use policy.
  • Allowance. The calls or minutes included in the monthly price. Unused allowance usually expires at the end of the month.
  • Overage. What you pay once the allowance is used up.
  • Effective cost per included minute or call. The monthly price divided by the allowance. It only holds if you use the whole allowance.
  • Billing increment. The unit a call is rounded up to: per second, per 30 seconds or per whole minute.

Which is cheaper for short calls, and which for long calls?

Per-minute pricing is cheaper for short calls and per-call pricing is cheaper for long ones. A per-call price is the same for a thirty-second enquiry as for a ten-minute booking, so a short call carries the full price for very little time. A minute allowance charges a short call only for the minutes it takes.

The break-even call length is the per-call price divided by the cost of a minute. The published UK per-call prices we read in October 2026 ran from 39p to 85p a call. Against Ringar AI Entry, at an effective cost per included minute of 12p, and Lite at 10p, the break-even lengths are:

Per-call priceBreak-even against 12p a minuteBreak-even against 10p a minute
39pAbout 3 minutes 15 secondsAbout 3 minutes 54 seconds
49pAbout 4 minutes 5 secondsAbout 4 minutes 54 seconds
85pAbout 7 minutes 5 secondsAbout 8 minutes 30 seconds

Below the break-even, the minute allowance is cheaper per call. Above it, the per-call price is.

What does a month cost at 2.5, 5 and 10 minutes a call?

A worked example. The assumptions are stated so you can swap in your own:

  • 150 answered calls a month, every call the same length.
  • The per-call plan is £69 a month including 100 calls, then 39p a call, a structure published in the UK in October 2026. That makes 150 calls £88.50, whatever their length.
  • The minute-allowance plan is Ringar AI's: Entry at £60 for 500 minutes, Lite at £90 for 900 and Pro at £320 for 4,000. Ringar AI sells no overage minutes, so the plan has to cover the whole month.
  • Prices exclude VAT, and launch discounts are left out.
Length of each callMinutes usedPer-call planMinute allowanceCheaper
About 2.5 minutes375£88.50£60 (Entry)Minute allowance, by £28.50
About 5 minutes750£88.50£90 (Lite)About the same
About 10 minutes1,500£88.50£320 (Pro)Per call, by £231.50

On calls of about two and a half minutes, the minute allowance works out at 40p a call against 59p. At about five minutes the two cost the same within £1.50. At about ten minutes the per-call plan is far cheaper. The crossover in this example sits at about five minutes a call, so the length of your own calls decides it. Your phone system's call log shows the number of answered calls and the total minutes: divide one by the other.

What hidden charges should you look for?

  • What counts as a call. None of the per-call pricing pages we read in October 2026 defined one. Ask whether hang-ups, wrong numbers, spam and calls of a few seconds count against the allowance.
  • Overage. What a call or a minute costs past the allowance, and whether extra packs are added to your bill automatically.
  • Billing increments. Rounding each call up to the next 30 seconds or whole minute adds up across hundreds of short calls.
  • Per-seat charges. Some plans include one dashboard user and charge for each extra person.
  • Live-agent surcharges. Transfers to a human answering team can carry a fee on top of the call.
  • Setup and onboarding fees. One-off charges to configure the assistant or move a number across.
  • VAT. Business prices are usually shown excluding VAT, which adds 20% in the UK.
  • Euro pricing. A plan priced in euros changes in pounds as the exchange rate moves, and your bank may add a foreign-transaction fee.
  • Annual lock-ins. Some headline monthly prices apply only when billed yearly. Check the monthly price and the notice period.
  • Number rental. Whether a phone number is included and what each extra number costs.
  • Unused allowance. Whether unused calls or minutes roll over. Usually they do not.

How does Ringar AI charge?

Ringar AI sells monthly plans with minutes included: Entry at £60 for 500 minutes, Lite at £90 for 900 and Pro at £320 for 4,000. Every account starts free with a UK phone number and 50 minutes a month, no card needed. Minutes are counted only on calls it answers. There are no setup fees, transfers cost nothing extra, and additional phone numbers are £5 a month each. Entry includes one dashboard user, Lite two and Pro ten. Prices are in pounds and exclude VAT, and plans are prepaid monthly with no annual commitment.

Two things to know before you choose. Unused minutes do not roll over. When the allowance runs out, new calls stop until you move to a larger plan, so the bill never grows on its own; a call already in progress always finishes normally. See every plan and what it includes.

What should you ask before you buy?

  1. What is the average length of our answered calls, from our own call log?
  2. What counts as a call, and do hang-ups, wrong numbers and spam count?
  3. What happens when the allowance runs out: overage, automatic top-ups, or calls stop?
  4. How is each call rounded: per second, per 30 seconds or per minute?
  5. Is the price in pounds, and does it include VAT?
  6. Is the headline price monthly, or only when billed yearly, and what is the notice period?
  7. Are there setup, onboarding or number-moving fees?
  8. How many users are included, and what does each extra one cost?
  9. Do transfers to a person cost extra?
  10. Is a phone number included, and what does each extra number cost?

Is per-minute or per-call pricing cheaper for an AI receptionist?

Per-minute pricing is usually cheaper when calls are short, and per-call pricing when calls are long. Divide the per-call price by the cost of a minute to find the break-even call length: 49p a call against 12p a minute breaks even at about four minutes.

What counts as a call on a per-call plan?

It depends on the provider, and none of the per-call pricing pages we read in October 2026 defined it. Ask whether hang-ups, wrong numbers, spam and very short calls count against your allowance before you sign up.

How do I work out my own average call length?

Your phone provider's call log or monthly bill usually shows the number of answered calls and the total minutes. Divide the minutes by the calls, and look at more than one month so a single busy week does not skew the figure.

Do AI receptionist prices include VAT?

Usually not. Business prices are normally shown excluding VAT, which adds 20% in the UK. Ringar AI's prices exclude VAT.

What happens when a Ringar AI plan runs out of minutes?

New calls stop until you move to a larger plan, so the bill never grows on its own. A call already in progress always finishes normally. Unused minutes do not roll over.
