AI receptionist vs a traditional answering service
Traditional UK answering services have decades of experience and real human warmth. AI receptionists trade that for consistency, calendar access and a lower published price at comparable volumes. Here is what each is actually good at.
UK telephone answering services have been operating for decades. Moneypenny was founded in 2000. Answer4u traces back over 20 years. JAM describes itself as the first UK answering service, founded in 1977. These are established, capable businesses, and an AI receptionist is not automatically the right choice over one of them. This piece compares the two options fairly, using what each publishes about itself.
What a human answering service actually offers
A traditional answering service puts a real person on the line, usually working from a script or a briefing about your business, who answers calls, takes messages, and in some cases transfers callers through to your team. Moneypenny, for instance, says its PAs "work in teams of five" so a caller reaching your line is more likely to speak to someone who has handled your business's calls before. Several UK services, including Face For Business, Answer4u and CallCare, hold quality accreditations such as ISO 9001 and, in CallCare's case, FCA authorisation for regulated call handling.
Coverage hours vary. Some, like alldayPA and CallCare, operate 24/7 as standard. Others, like Face For Business, publish specific hours (Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm, with reduced weekend cover) and charge more for extending them. This matters: "human answering service" does not automatically mean round-the-clock cover, and it is worth checking a specific provider's published hours rather than assuming.
What it costs, where pricing is published
Pricing for human answering services is often not public at all. Of the UK providers we researched, Moneypenny, Answer4u, alldayPA, CallCare, Verbatim and Frontline Communications all quote on request rather than publishing a plan table. Where pricing is public, it typically runs on a per-call or per-minute basis with a monthly minimum:
- AnswerConnect UK: published plans from £205 a month for 150 minutes, up to £395 for 350 minutes, with £1.75 a minute overage on most tiers.
- Pocket Receptionist: £75 a month for 30 calls, up to £635 for 300 calls, with £2.99 per additional call.
- Perfect Reception: £28 a month for 20 calls, up to £481 for 500 calls, on an initial three-month contract.
- Face For Business: starts "from £49" a month, though its specific minute and call allowances are not published.
These figures are genuinely useful for comparison, but they are per-call or per-minute pricing on a human service, which is a different shape to a minutes-included AI plan, so treat any direct pound-for-pound comparison with care.
Where a human answering service is genuinely stronger
- Warmth and judgement. A person can read tone, handle a genuinely upset caller, and improvise in a way that is difficult to match. This is the real, non-marketing case for a human service, and it should not be dismissed.
- Established scale and trust signals. Moneypenny reports handling over 40,000 calls a day with 1,000 UK and US staff, and has been recognised in the Sunday Times Best Companies to Work For list across multiple years, a signal of operational maturity most newer AI products cannot yet match.
- Regulatory accreditation. CallCare's FCA authorisation and several providers' ISO 27001 or Cyber Essentials Plus certifications matter directly to businesses in regulated sectors, such as financial services or healthcare.
- Sector specialisation. Providers such as Best Reception (healthcare diaries: Cliniko, Jane, PracticeHub) and several others build genuine sector expertise that a general AI receptionist would need to be configured to match.
Where an AI receptionist changes the equation
- Consistency, every single call. A human team answering thousands of calls a day will have variation in how thoroughly each call is handled. An AI receptionist follows the same information and the same standard on every call, with no bad day and no new starter still learning the business.
- Calendar access on the call itself. Ringar AI can check real availability and book an appointment during the call where a calendar is connected. Traditional answering services typically take a message for a callback rather than book directly into your diary during the call, unless specifically built to integrate with it.
- A transfer to your own team, when you set a number. Ringar AI can put a caller through to a transfer number you choose. When the call cannot be put through, it takes a message or arranges a callback with the context attached.
- Published, predictable pricing. Ringar AI's plans, minutes included, are published upfront: Entry at £60 a month for 500 minutes, up to Pro at £320 a month for 4,000 minutes. Several human providers, by contrast, require a quote, which makes budgeting harder before you commit.
The honest comparison
| Human answering service | Ringar AI | |
|---|---|---|
| Who answers | A real person, often from a small team assigned to your account | An AI receptionist, working from the information you have given it |
| Consistency | Varies by agent and day | The same standard on every call |
| Booking during the call | Usually a message for callback, unless built to integrate | Books directly where a calendar is connected |
| Pricing | Often quote-only; published plans typically per-call or per-minute | Published monthly plans with minutes included |
| Judgement and warmth | Genuinely strong, a real person on the line | Consistent, but not a substitute for human judgement on genuinely difficult calls |
How to actually decide
If your business handles calls that regularly need real human judgement, an upset customer, a complex negotiation, a sensitive conversation, a human answering service's strengths matter more than any of the numbers above. If most of your calls are routine, answering questions, taking details, booking appointments, an AI receptionist can do that consistently at a lower and more predictable published cost. The way to find out which fits is to hear it: try the demonstration line on the homepage with a call your business actually gets.

Is a human answering service more expensive than an AI receptionist?
Where pricing is published, human answering services in the UK typically run £28 to £635 a month on per-call plans, often with per-call overage charges of £1 to £3. Ringar AI publishes fixed monthly plans from £60 to £320 with minutes included. Many human providers do not publish pricing at all, so a direct comparison needs a quote.
Can a human answering service book appointments directly into my calendar?
It depends on the provider and whether it has been set up to integrate with your specific calendar. Most take a message for a callback by default. Ringar AI checks real availability and books during the call where a calendar is connected.
Do human answering services require a minimum contract?
Some do. Perfect Reception, for example, publishes an initial three-month contract. Others, like Pocket Receptionist, state month-to-month terms. Check the specific provider's own terms rather than assuming.
