83% of SMEs say they couldn't function without their phone line
Consultancies, agencies and advisory firms live on client relationships built through calls that need to be answered properly. Here is the sourced evidence on why the phone still carries more weight than most firms treat it as having.
This piece covers administrative call handling for consultancies, agencies and advisory firms generally, enquiries, scheduling, client contact, not professional advice of any kind, which stays with your own team.
The phone is treated as essential infrastructure, not a nice-to-have
Ofcom's own 2022 research into the SME communications market, run by BVA BDRC across 2,109 SME telecom decision-makers, found 83% of SMEs say they could not function as a business without communications services. That is a stronger claim than most businesses make about any single tool they use, and it puts phone handling in the category of infrastructure a firm depends on, not a discretionary nice-to-have.
Getting through does not always mean getting resolved
The Financial Conduct Authority's Financial Lives 2022 survey, based on 19,145 respondents, found 14% of UK adults holding a financial product, 7.4 million people, unsuccessfully tried to contact their provider in a single year. A further 7%, 3.6 million people, did get through but still could not get the information or support they needed. Read together, that is two distinct failure points: not reaching anyone at all, and reaching someone without the call actually resolving anything. Both matter for how a firm's first point of contact is handled, whichever kind of professional service it offers.
Follow-up contact is inconsistent, even in a regulated sector
RICS' own qualitative research into home surveys, based on six focus groups conducted in April 2026, found that clients were not always offered a follow-up conversation about their report, and some were left with the impression a surveyor would be reluctant to have one, particularly where the client was dissatisfied. A firm that is genuinely available to talk something through, consistently, is doing something the sector's own research shows is not universal.
The wider satisfaction picture
The Institute of Customer Service's UK Customer Satisfaction Index, based on 59,500 responses across 277 organisations, put the July 2026 headline score at 78.3 out of 100, up only 0.1 points on the previous half-year reading. This is a general index, not a phone-specific one, but it is a useful backdrop: overall UK customer satisfaction is essentially flat, which makes a genuinely responsive phone line a real point of difference rather than table stakes everyone already clears.
What actually changes with an AI receptionist
Ringar AI answers every enquiry call, whether it's a prospective client asking what you do, an existing client following up, or someone trying to book time with a specific person, and captures what they need properly. Where a calendar is connected, it can book a call or meeting directly. It does not give financial, legal or any other professional advice; that boundary stays exactly where it already is, with your own advisers. What it changes is the two failure points the evidence above describes: a call that cannot get through at all, and a call that gets answered but doesn't actually capture what the person needed.
A worked example, not a claim about your firm
A prospective client calls a consultancy asking whether the firm works with businesses their size. Ringar AI answers from the information you've given it about who you work with, captures the caller's details and what they're looking for, and, where a calendar is connected, offers a slot for an introductory call. The person who follows up has a real, accurate starting point rather than a missed call and a guess at what the enquiry was about.

How important is phone contact to UK small businesses?
Ofcom's own 2022 research found 83% of SMEs say they could not function as a business without communications services, putting phone handling firmly in the category of essential infrastructure.
Can Ringar AI give financial, legal or other professional advice?
No. It never gives advice of any kind. It captures the caller's details and what they need, and, where a calendar is connected, can book a call, but the advice itself always comes from your own team.
