What actually changes when you switch from voicemail or an answering service

Switching how your phone is answered is not a feature comparison, it is a practical question of contracts and call continuity. What genuinely changes, what your current provider's terms mean for timing, and how to do it without a caller ever noticing.

This is about the practical mechanics of switching, contract terms, your phone number, call continuity, not a case for any particular provider over another.

The real constraint is usually the contract you are already in, not the technology

If you already use a traditional UK answering service, check your terms before assuming you can switch this week. Moneypenny's own published terms, for example, set a minimum contract of three months for smaller schemes and a six to twelve month commitment for larger ones, with a month's notice required to leave a smaller scheme and three months' notice for a larger one. That is not unusual for the sector; it is simply worth knowing before you plan a switch date, since leaving early or without proper notice can carry its own cost.

Most AI receptionist providers publish a different shape of terms entirely. Across the UK AI receptionist products researched for this piece, "no contract, cancel anytime" is close to the default position, though it is always worth confirming a specific provider's current terms rather than assuming.

Your phone number usually does not need to change

This is the part that causes the most unnecessary hesitation. Two approaches exist, and neither requires your customers to learn a new number. Some providers, Jodie among them, work by call forwarding: your existing number stays exactly as it is, calls are simply forwarded to the new service, described on Jodie's own site as "no porting, no new numbers." Other providers offer number porting so calls can move onto a dedicated new number while the old one is retired, with providers such as Team-Connect explicitly marketing this as "keep your number." Either way, the switch does not require your printed materials, Google listing or years of word-of-mouth to catch up with a new number.

What actually needs to happen, in order

Set the new service up first, in parallel, while your existing arrangement is still live, so you can hear how it handles calls before anything changes for a real caller. Test it against calls your business actually gets. Only once you are satisfied should you change the forwarding, or complete the porting, and if you are leaving a contracted provider, do it in line with whatever notice period your existing terms require, so you are not paying for two services longer than necessary, or leaving early without the required notice.

A worked example, not a claim about your business

A business currently uses a traditional answering service on a rolling monthly term after its minimum period has passed. They set up Ringar AI on a separate test number first, run their own typical calls through it, and once satisfied, forward their main business number across during a quiet period, with a month's written notice already given to the outgoing provider as their terms require. Customers dial the same number they always have; nothing about it looks different from the outside.

Do I need to change my business phone number to switch?

Usually not. Providers typically work either by forwarding your existing number to the new service, or by porting your number across, and in both cases your customers keep dialling the number they already know.

Can I switch away from a traditional answering service immediately?

Check your current terms first. Traditional UK answering services often carry a minimum contract term and a notice period, Moneypenny's own published terms run from one to three months' notice depending on scheme size, so the timing of a switch usually depends on your existing agreement, not the technology.
